After the critique we conducted online, we had an in person critique in our tutor group. A separate tutor was ill that day so we had extra people in our group to present to. Although this was nerve-racking, it was beneficial to have to present to others who haven't heard anything about my project thus far so I could get valuable feedback on whether I’ve communicated everything clearly or whether there were still things missing; in the project itself or just in the way it was presented.
I made more of an effort to present my project this time in comparison to the online critique, as it was an in person presentation so I wanted to communicate it as best as possible. I tried to include all the relevant information such as why I started this project in reference to the fashion waste problem, who my influences were, my experimentation so far and my ideas for my final piece.
The main feedback I received was that everyone understood my project and the direction I went in, they thought the prints were successful and were impressed with the fact that I’ve tried to use all materials as best I can. They also liked the idea of me adding additional parts to my installation, such as small example prints that people can take home with them, or examples of something my prints could be made into, eg. a t-shirt.
Mockups I made showing examples of clothing that my prints could be used for
We discussed my rough final piece sketch a little more, as I asked which of the installations would seem more fitting in relation to the concept of my project. Figure 1 is a sketch of a pile of fashion waste dumped on the floor that slowly transitions across the walls and into my prints that are hung up. Figure 2 is a sketch of my prints combined and sewed into one large bag that sits as a sculpture and resembles the original bag I collected with all of the fabric waste. The feedback I received was that Figure 2 has a strong concept but doesn’t look as effective visually. Whereas Figure 1 was visually more appealing, but the pile of clothing could potentially be presented better. Some discussed that I could try to combine the two and still have the sculpture from Figure 2 situated where the pile of clothing is instead, alongside the fabric that gradually transitions into my prints. This sounded like an idea I’d like to explore as it still conveys all aspects as well as being visually engaging.
