Magazine research

I decided to make a magazine moodboard of pages I find effective. I also took photographs of magazines that I have at home. They are magazines based on art, photography and design, and therefore the spreads are all designed with the pictures being the key feature on each page. Sometimes there is a little text accompanying the pages, but the viewer is always drawn to the imagery first. Most pages seem to have only one prominent colour per spread, as a single use of colour can have a more striking and sophisticated affect. Additionally, illustrations can make for a unique touch, and can add to a strong branded style. Especially the fashion / photography magazines feature a minimal design, as a white background is a great way to showcase new styles.

Another key feature to have when designing a magazine is having specific values. I looked up a few successful magazine’s values:

Cosmopolitan:

  • Fun

  • Positivity and upbeat content

  • Reflecting an energised world of a sassy, sexy woman

  • Innovate and evolving

Radio Times:

  • Quality

  • Intelligence

  • Touch of style

Glamour:

  • Less-is-more consumer mood (based on its novelty size)

  • Concise but great combination of content

  • Instant-read monthly handbook

  • Target audience: Mid twenties

Marie Claire:

  • Stylish

  • Affordable fashion

  • Beauty

  • Life issues

  • Serious reportage

  • Emotional intelligence
