The first workshop we had was based on a Five-Frame Sequence, which we had to create based on our ideas generated from the graphic story plots. The aim was to be as creative and visionary as possible. A useful way to construct a successful story is by analysing the mechanics of storytelling. This can be achieved by integrating Contrasts, Affinities, Visual Dynamism or Emotional Atmosphere into the narrative.
Narrative structure:
The narrative structure is usually considered as the framework of which the narrative is based on, including the order of how the story is depicted to the audience. The narrative structure generally consists of an introduction, a chorus and a coda. During the introduction the setting is initiated and the characters are portrayed. The chorus will take on the perspective of an onlooker to outline events and draw in the viewer through emotional response, and lastly the coda takes place at the end of a story and concludes it.
"This multiple narrative structure can be described as a Journey, these are the stages:
- The Ordinary World - the hero is seen in his/her everyday life
- The Call to Adventure- the initiating incident of the story
- Refusal of the Call- the hero experiences some hesitation to answer the call
- Meeting with the Mentor- the hero gains the supplies, knowledge, and confidence needed to commence the adventure
- Crossing the First Threshold- the hero commits wholeheartedly to the adventure
- Tests, Allies and Enemies- the hero explores the special world, faces trial, and makes friends and enemies
- Approach to the Innermost Cave- the hero nears the center of the story and the special world
- The Ordeal- the hero faces the greatest challenge yet and experiences death and rebirth
- Reward- the hero experiences the consequences of surviving death
- The Road Back- the hero returns to the ordinary world or continues to an ultimate destination
- The Resurrection- the hero experiences a final moment of death and rebirth so they are pure when they reenter the ordinary world
- Return with the Elixir- the hero returns with something to improve the ordinary world"
