The Five Frame Sequence Part II

My Story:

For my story I felt as though I could incorporate affinities, contrasts and emotional atmosphere the most. I’ve decided it will be more strategic for me to focus on my great-grandfather and his experiences during the war, as I have more information to base my story on, and its a stronger concept that will intrigue a wider audience. I’d also like to experiment with attempting to portray a different side of a German soldiers story during World War 2 by including personal aspects.

Affinities:

An affinity means gaining a natural liking of someone and understanding them and their traits better. Once having built this connection it is easier to empathise and bond with them. This feature is used to keep the audience absorbed in the character’s relationships between each other. Occasionally, affinities can be based on additional factors in a storyline, including social obligations and character goals.

In my story I will be using affinities to help people understand what it was like to be forced to join the War in Germany at a very young age. I will also form a natural liking towards my characters (my great-grandfather, great-grandmother, and grandmother) through depicting the struggles and difficulties they had to face in the past.

Contrasts:

Using contrasts in storytelling is an effective way to stir the observer’s emotions. The narrator is able to provoke a wide range of feelings by telling multiple sides of a story, for example using someone else’s point of view. Combining contrary sides of a story, guides us to be thoroughly hooked on the narrative and enables us to involve ourselves. The framing of a story is highly significant, as this is what the spectators respond most to, depending on how effectively the tale is executed.

Rather than simply showing the point of view from my great-grandfather, I would like to include perspectives of his family and relatives or even fellow soldiers, so that several character’s outlook’s are revealed. This will allow my story to have more depth to it, while also creating a relationship between the audience and characters.

Emotional Atmosphere:

Emotional atmosphere is a feeling that is generated from a narrative, which depends on the setting, background, objects and foreshadowing. It’s an expansive term and can be established by a place, such as a venue. The function of setting an atmosphere is to create emotional attachment, which makes a written or visual work more captivating by keeping the audience hooked. The atmosphere allows viewers to feel indirectly, which gives creators the opportunity to deliver more intense feelings with less force. This is achieved by altering the description of the surroundings and items.

By basing my story on real events I appeal to the readers more directly. I will focus on getting the audience involved in my characters through carefully constructing the setting, background, objects and atmosphere. The setting will probably have the biggest impact, as my narrative will be situated either within the trenches or at home in a personal environment. I will also use props and foreshadowing to further enhance emotional atmosphere.
